Project Topic
This project invites you to help shape a tool that could fundamentally change how architects estimate project costs. Over ten weeks, you will contribute to the development of a structured and standardised cost estimation model for Assar Architects.
You will analyse how construction costs are currently assessed across different design phases and translate these practices into a clear, uniform framework. Your work includes mapping cost parameters and design data, developing a conceptual model and building it into a functional prototype. You will also define the minimum required inputs per design phase and explore how cost estimation can be linked to graphical design documents.
By testing the tool on real cases, you will formulate practical recommendations to ensure it can be integrated into the firm’s daily workflow.
The Company
Assar Architects is a leading Belgian architecture firm active across a wide range of sectors, from healthcare and offices to large‑scale public and industrial projects. As part of its ongoing focus on efficiency and data‑driven design, the firm aims to develop a unified and reliable cost estimation tool that supports architects throughout the entire design process.
Project Goals
- Analyse current cost estimation practices across design phases
- Map relevant cost parameters and design data
- Develop a structured conceptual model for cost estimation
- Build the model into a functional prototype
- Define minimum input requirements per design phase
- Explore links between cost estimation and graphical design documents
- Test the tool on real cases and provide practical recommendations
Why should you participate?
You’ll gain insight into how financial considerations are embedded in the design process and contribute to a tool with real impact on architectural projects. It’s an opportunity to work on a concrete challenge that blends design logic, data structuring, and practical decision‑making.
What's in it for you?
- Experience with process analysis and tool development
- Insight into how architecture firms integrate cost and design
- Hands‑on work with modelling, prototyping, and data structuring
- Collaboration with a motivated, multidisciplinary team
- Professional reporting with direct relevance for a real client
- ECTS‑certified project
You’ll develop strong analytical, technical, and communication skills while contributing to a tool that supports architects in making better, more informed decisions.
